How to value precious metals

Time tested methods:Basic scratch and touch stone testing with acid,These methods compare scratch marks from unknown karat gold items with known karat gold needle marks.

ICP-OES Inductively coupled plasma optical emissions spectroscopy.The sample to be analyzed, if solid, is normally first dissolved and then mixed with water before being fed into the plasma. Atoms in the plasma emit light (photons) with characteristic wavelengths for each element. This light is recorded by one or more optical spectrometers and when calibrated against standards the technique provides a quantitative analysis of the original sample.

Fire Assay. This method involves weighing a sample smelting and refining it and weighing again. It usually is used for ore or rock samples in the mining industry.

Melt Assay, This is where the metal is melted down and samples taken and tested in laboratory. This is a dead on way of knowing exactly what you have.

All of the above methods destroy or deface the item being tested

The following methods are all N.D.T. (nondestructive testing) methods:

EGT- or electronic gold tester is one of the least accurate ways of valuing karat gold. A lot of small shops have these devices, but they are not terribly accurate.

Density check (specific gravity) this is done by water displacement. And this pretty good at telling you what you have.

X-Ray Fluorescence. (XRF) is defined as the emission of characteristic "secondary" (or fluorescent) X-rays from a material that has been excited by bombarding with high-energy X-rays or gamma rays. This is a very effective way of telling what the metal on the surface is.
